BBC Lighting Workshop Part 2

On the 27th November 2008 as an AS Media Students we were invited to the second part of a two day workshop course in Filming & Lighting at the BBC Studios in White City. The workshop was a continuation of the one which we attended on Friday 14th November 2008. This workshop was an excellent opportunity for us, Media students to develop our knowledge & skills, to use the programme Final Cut Pro.

We arrived there around 10.00am & was introduced to David (I think) who was a Camera man. He talked us through the basics and gave us few tips about camera works. He then showed us a short movie of the film he made -(which he was filming for) as a class we then had to ask any questions we had. We then got into our groups that we were in from the previous visit, and done a bit more filming by interviewing people in the BBC Studios - Which was going to be added to our footage's. My role was the person interviewing people and, asking them the question " Has anything wired happened to you today?" As this was part of our scenario. Luciana was the camera person & Fenelia's job was asking people if we can interview them, and explaining the situation why we were, asking them the question above.

After lunch we then went up to the computer rooms, to edit our footage's by using Final Cut Pro. Personally I enjoyed filming better than using Final Cut Pro, because filming was more easier than using the programme Final Cut Pro. Finally once we had edited our footages we then watched them as a class! -

BBC Lighting Workshop

Last week Friday, on the 14th November as an AS Media Students we were invited on a one day workshop course in Filming and Lighting, at the BBC Studios in White City. This workshop was an excellent opportunity for us, Media Students to develop our skills and perhaps achieve our qualification for Year 12.

We arrived there around 10.00am and we spoke to Shelly who was a female director. She showed us couple of examples of her short films, that she has produced. As a class we then had to ask any questions that we had of the films in terms of how it was produced (filmed), and what sort of lighting was used to create the particular atmosphere of the film. Later on during the workshop, the second half was run by a man called Richard (I think) who is an expert in lighting - as this is his job. He talked about lighting and different types of lighting, for example he showed us different kind of lights and different reflectors. He also showed us the different coloured gels - which is used to create an effect and the mood for the film.

Just before lunch we was split into 4 different small groups, where each of us was given a different scenario to work on. In my group it was me, Fenelia and Luciana. Our scenario was the news reports where Luciana & Fenelia were the news reports and I was the camera person. It was nice being the camera person, because now I am comfortable working with cameras.

Rule of thirds

The rule of third is a grid which is divided into 9 equal parts. When using the grid for the rule of thirds, it is important that you make sure that all characters eye levels are above or around the top line. The focus point of the shot is normally where the crossing of the 2 lines are, and the top line is usually where the eyes are positioned.
